The Ultimate Interview Preparation Checklist

Walking into an interview prepared is the single most effective thing you can do to increase your chances of success. This checklist covers everything from research to follow-up, so you can walk in confident and walk out with an offer.

Before the Interview

Research the Company

  • Review the company website, especially their About, Values, and Careers pages
  • Read recent news articles and press releases about the company
  • Understand their products, services, target market, and competitors
  • Check Glassdoor for employee reviews and interview experiences
  • Look up your interviewers on LinkedIn to understand their backgrounds

Prepare Your Answers

  • Practice the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) for behavioral questions
  • Prepare 5-7 stories that showcase your key achievements and skills
  • Have a clear, concise answer for “Tell me about yourself” (60-90 seconds)
  • Prepare thoughtful questions to ask the interviewer — at least 3-5

Handle Logistics

  • Confirm the date, time, time zone, and format (in-person vs. video)
  • For video interviews: test your camera, microphone, lighting, and internet
  • For in-person interviews: plan your route and arrive 10-15 minutes early
  • Prepare copies of your resume, portfolio, and any requested documents

During the Interview

Make a Strong First Impression

  • Greet your interviewer with a firm handshake (in-person) or a warm smile (video)
  • Maintain good eye contact and positive body language throughout
  • Listen actively — let the interviewer finish their questions before answering

Answer Strategically

  • Use specific examples rather than generic statements
  • Quantify your achievements whenever possible
  • Be honest about gaps or weaknesses, but frame them as learning experiences
  • Connect your answers back to the requirements of the role

Ask Great Questions

  • “What does success look like in this role in the first 90 days?”
  • “What are the biggest challenges the team is facing right now?”
  • “How would you describe the team culture and management style?”
  • “What is the typical career progression for someone in this role?”

After the Interview

Follow Up Promptly

  • Send a personalized thank-you email within 24 hours to each interviewer
  • Reference specific topics you discussed to make it memorable
  • Reiterate your enthusiasm for the role and the company
  • If you do not hear back within the stated timeline, follow up once politely

Reflect and Improve

  • Write down the questions you were asked while they are fresh in your mind
  • Note what went well and what you would do differently next time
  • If you receive a rejection, ask for feedback — many interviewers are willing to share constructive notes that can help you improve for future opportunities
